The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher

The true & riveting story of The Murder at Road Hill House enthralled the whole of the UK in the 1860's as everyone had an opinion as to who snatched three-year-old Saville Kent from his cot in an upper room in the house, took him outside and brutally murdered him.

Jack Whicher, the most celebrated detective of the day is sent to solve the murder. Each member of the family gained notoriety as every movement on that fateful night was scrutinised. The case inspired writers most notably Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens.

Kate Summerscale tells Nicola Barranger what happened that fateful night and her feelings about the story now.

Kate Summerscale has been awarded the BBC Four Samuel Johnson prize for The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher - Britain's richest prize for non-fiction.

"I am writing to tell you how interesting and profitable your interview with Kate

Kate Summerscale Lg

Summerscale was for me. I am a teacher of English as a foreign language at an Italian high school. After listening to the interview I read the book and enjoyed it a great deal. I also found it really inspiring and useful for my students, so now I have decided to use it in my class of 18-year-old students in a project about the Victorian age and the development of detective stories in English literature. Thank you for giving me such an opportunity. I will let you know how it's going."
