Mavis Cheek

For Mavis Cheek her 13th novel is a departure from her normal fare of observation of manners and observational comedy in middle England.

For Amenable Women Ms Cheek takes us to the 16th century and the court of the notorious King Henry VIII who famously removes his wives either by divorce or beheading. Cheek seeks to redress the reputation of Anna of Cleves, Henry’s fourth wife who was unceremoniously labelled “The Flanders Mare”.

In the video interview Mavis Cheek explains why it was convenient at the time to call Anna ugly, why she was an intelligent survivor at a dangerous time in history and how modern day Flora Chapman is seeking to set the record straight.
